Summary

"The Survivors of the Chancellor" by Jules Verne is a maritime adventure set in the 19th century, chronicling the ill-fated journey of the ship Chancellor as told through the eyes of passenger J. R. Kazallon. The novel follows the ship's voyage from Charleston, led by the possibly unstable Captain Huntly, with Kazallon's entries offering readers a window into the rising tension and unease among the crew and passengers. The situation takes a turn for the worse when fire erupts in the cargo hold, thrusting the survival of everyone on the ship into question and highlighting the courage of First Mate Robert Curtis alongside other passengers like the devoted M. Letourneur and his son as they face disaster head-on.

About the Author

Jules Gabriel Verne was a French novelist, poet, and playwright. His collaboration with the publisher Pierre-Jules Hetzel led to the creation of the Voyages extraordinaires, a series of bestselling adventure novels including Journey to the Center of the Earth (1864), Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas (1870), and Around the World in Eighty Days (1872). His novels, always well-researched according to the scientific knowledge then available, are generally set in the second half of the 19th century, taking into account the technological advances of the time.
