Summary

"The Master of the World" by Jules Verne is a science fiction story set in the late 1800s, focusing on innovation and exploring new ideas, following Chief Inspector John Strock as he looks into strange events happening around the Great Eyrie mountain in North Carolina, which people think might erupt or hold something even stranger, that unfolds near Morganton. The story starts with John Strock, the federal police chief, describing odd things witnessed near the mountain in North Carolina. People in the area are worried that the Great Eyrie might erupt because of odd sounds and bright flashes coming from it. Strock is sent to check it out, meeting with the town's mayor and guides to find out what's really going on. The story gets more exciting as Strock's job is made harder not only by the land itself but also by the chance of finding an amazing invention—a machine that can travel on land, sea, and air in unimaginable ways—suggesting a battle between how determined people are to gain knowledge and the puzzles that are beyond what humans can understand.

About the Author

His novels, always well-researched according to the scientific knowledge then available, are generally set in the second half of the 19th century, taking into account the technological advances of the time.
