The Indulgence of Negu Mah

"The Indulgence of Negu Mah" by Robert Arthur is a science fiction story that happens far in the future. Negu Mah, a rich seller of uranium from Callisto, has a wife named Nanlo who isn't happy, even though he gives her everything she wants. She falls in love with another person, Hugh Neils, and they both want to run away together. They plan to take Negu Mah's rocket, the Vulcan, without him knowing. But Negu Mah finds out about their plan and makes a surprising choice, he lets them go. Even though he lets them escape, he makes sure they will have to answer for their actions. He quietly changes the controls of the ship to go to Proxima Centauri, which means they will be traveling through space for a very long time. The story forces us to think about what love really means, and whether it's better to give people what they want or make them responsible for what they do.
