Summary

"Chaucer's Works, Volume 6 — Introduction, Glossary, and Indexes" by Geoffrey Chaucer is a detailed scholarly analysis of Chaucer's important writings, created in the late 1800s. This book helps readers and experts understand Chaucer's language, central ideas, and importance in literature by providing glossaries and indexes, making it easier to appreciate. As part of a larger project, the book aims to protect and clarify Chaucer's original stories and poems from the 1300s for today's readers. The book starts by explaining how it will explore Chaucer's works, stating that it will focus on giving the most correct versions of his writings, based on old manuscripts and early printed copies. Walter W. Skeat, the editor, stresses that it is important to tell apart Chaucer's actual works from those wrongly credited to him. He mentions that the book offers thorough glossaries, notes, and language explanations to help students and poetry fans fully enjoy Chaucer's artistry in writing. The book's careful and precise way of explaining things shows that it deeply examines Chaucer's work.

About the Author

Geoffrey Chaucer was an English poet, author, and civil servant best known for The Canterbury Tales. He has been called the "father of English literature", or, alternatively, the "father of English poetry". He was the first writer to be buried in what has since come to be called Poets' Corner, in Westminster Abbey. Chaucer also gained fame as a philosopher and astronomer, composing the scientific A Treatise on the Astrolabe for his 10-year-old son, Lewis. He maintained a career in the civil service as a bureaucrat, courtier, diplomat, and member of parliament.
