Summary

"Eleanor" by Mrs. Humphry Ward is a novel set in the Edwardian period that tells the story of Lucy Foster, a young woman who journeys to Italy to live with her relatives, Edward Manisty and Miss Manisty. The story introduces the complex relationships between the characters, with Edward's initial annoyance at Lucy's arrival contrasting with his aunt's eagerness to accommodate her, as Eleanor Burgoyne offers witty commentary. Lucy’s shyness and unfamiliarity with her surroundings are immediately apparent as she adapts to a new social and cultural environment. The Italian landscape serves as a backdrop to her personal growth and the relationships that shape her journey of self-discovery.
