"Miss Meredith" by Amy Levy is a story from old England that follows Elsie Meredith, a girl from a poor family, as she becomes a governess in Italy for the Marchesa Brogi. The book shows Elsie trying to make her way in a new life with family troubles, different cultures, and first feelings of love while feeling alone. The story starts by showing Elsie's family as she thinks about going to Pisa, with a mix of happiness and sadness as she says goodbye to her mother and sisters. Even though she is excited to travel, she soon feels unsure and misses home. When she gets to the Palazzo Brogi, she isn't welcomed warmly and begins to understand her students and surroundings. This sets the scene for her to struggle with being lonely as she faces problems in her new Italian job.
