Summary

"The Drug" by C. C. MacApp is a science fiction tale from the early 1960s, centering on a mysterious new chemical coming out of Whelan, Inc, derived from hypnotic mescaline. Amos Parry, a concerned regional manager, is disturbed by the drug's ability to drastically alter consciousness and the possible effects of the drug’s release on both animals and people. As Parry looks deeper into the experiments done by chemist Frank Barnes, he learns it can activate unused parts of the brain, which causes surprising changes. After Barnes takes the drug, things take a dark turn, leading to a strange series of events involving life, death, and transformation. Parry wrestles with the aftermath of Barnes' transformation and must decide the drug's fate, understanding the dangers it could cause if it fell into the wrong hands.
