Summary

"Shaman" by Robert Shea is a story situated in the early 1800s exploring the clash between Native Americans and European settlers, primarily through the eyes of Gray Cloud, a half-Sauk youth striving to become a shaman and come to grips with his mixed heritage. Beginning in the harsh winter of 1825 where Gray Cloud, draped in bearskin, embarks on a vision quest in a sacred cave where he confronts his deepest fears and ambitions while engaging with powerful spirits, including the White Bear as Redbird, a girl devoted to Gray Cloud, anticipates his return where she is wrestling with her emotions and anxiously sensing his danger. This sets the scene for intense examination of heritage, cultural clashes, and development of self within a vibrant historic landscape.
