Summary

"Kokoro: Hints and Echoes of Japanese Inner Life" by Lafcadio Hearn is a series of insightful essays that explores the depths of Japanese culture and thought in the late 1800s. It examines Japanese concepts of right and wrong, the subtle feelings that guide behavior, and the deep inner world that influences Japanese society. The book begins with a powerful scene at a train station, where a criminal named Kusabe has to face both the wife of the man who he killed and her son. This very emotional meeting brings up big ideas about guilt, forgiveness, and fairness, especially as the son is encouraged to meet the person who caused his father's death. The reactions of those watching show how complicated ideas about crime and its consequences were in Japanese society, while also showing a mix of feelings and duty within their culture. Hearn's writing beautifully captures these moments, hinting at a vibrant inner life influenced by long standing customs, ethical principles, and shared experiences.
