Summary

"Shadowings" by Lafcadio Hearn is a set of stories and essays from the early 1900s that shares Japanese culture, old stories, and beliefs, showing Hearn's strong interest in Japan, where he lived and taught English. The writings, which include themes of love, guilt, and strange events, show readers a world full of old stories and understanding of what it means to be human in Japanese culture. The first story, "The Reconciliation," tells of a young Samurai from KyĹŤto who sees his mistake in leaving his caring first wife to climb the social ladder. Years later, he is haunted by memories of her kindness and love. He searches to find her, only to learn that she died of sadness after he left, setting a mood of sadness and thinking as the story emphasizes the pain of losing love and the feeling of regret using descriptive writing.
