Summary

"Gombo Zhèbes: Little Dictionary of Creole Proverbs" by Lafcadio Hearn is a window into the vibrant Creole culture of Louisiana through its unique collection of proverbs. The book begins by defining "gombo" as more than just a popular dish; it's a symbol of the Creole language itself, a mix of different cultures. It explains how Creole dialects evolved and changed, becoming something distinct from French. This introduction sets the scene for a look at the proverbs and the stories behind them, opening up a world of folklore and giving you a peek into the lives and traditions of the Creole people.

About the Author

Yakumo Koizumi , born Patrick Lafcadio Hearn, was a writer, translator, and teacher who introduced the culture and literature of Japan to the West. His writings offered unprecedented insight into Japanese culture, especially his collections of legends and ghost stories, such as Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Things. Before moving to Japan and becoming a Japanese citizen, he worked as a journalist in the United States, primarily in Cincinnati and New Orleans. His writings about New Orleans, based on his decade-long stay there, are also well-known.
