Summary

Far from the Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy is a novel taking place in the late 1800s that follows the steadfast farmer Gabriel Oak as his world intertwines with the headstrong Bathsheba Everdene in a rustic community. As Gabriel is captivated by Bathsheba, their interactions reveal contrasts in their characters; Gabriel is shown as a hardworking and reserved man, while Bathsheba has a strong-willed, independent nature. The story explores their budding relationship amidst challenges and expectations presented by rural society. The novel offers a glimpse into the trials of both romantic love and rural life.

About the Author

Thomas Hardy was an English novelist and poet. A Victorian realist in the tradition of George Eliot, he was influenced both in his novels and in his poetry by Romanticism, including the poetry of William Wordsworth. He was highly critical of much in Victorian society, especially on the declining status of rural people in Britain such as those from his native South West England.
