Summary

"Sketches and Studies in Italy and Greece, Second Series" by John Addington Symonds is a late 19th-century travel memoir, chronicling the author's explorations of Italy and Greece, emphasizing their historical, artistic, and cultural treasures. Beginning with the once-thriving maritime hub of Ravenna, the author highlights the city's ancient origins and the picturesque pine forests that inspired writers like Dante and Byron, further connecting the landscape to historical figures and artistic achievements. He reflects on the passage of time, capturing the melancholy beauty of Ravenna's silent ancient churches and inviting readers to contemplate the enduring legacy of art and culture amid decay.

About the Author

John Addington Symonds Jr. was an English poet and literary critic. A cultural historian, he was known for his work on the Renaissance, as well as numerous biographies of writers and artists. He also wrote much poetry inspired by his same-sex affairs.
