Summary

"Renaissance in Italy, Volume 3 (of 7)" by John Addington Symonds is a record that dives into the world of art in Italy during the Renaissance. It looks at painting, sculptures, and buildings, all touched by the spirit of the Renaissance. The book tells how art changed from old styles to new ones inspired by ancient times, and also tells how art reflects the thinking and feelings of the people. The book begins by explaining what it will be discussing: the special link between artwork and Renaissance society. It shows how art became an important way to share new thoughts and feelings, not just pretty decorations. It also speaks about how both Christian beliefs and old stories had impact on the rise of the arts, especially painting, which became the greatest art form of the Italian Renaissance.

About the Author

John Addington Symonds Jr. was an English poet and literary critic. A cultural historian, he was known for his work on the Renaissance, as well as numerous biographies of writers and artists. Although married with children, Symonds supported male love (homosexuality), which he believed could include pederastic as well as egalitarian relationships, referring to it as l'amour de l'impossible. He also wrote much poetry inspired by his same-sex affairs.
