Summary

"The Splendid Outcast" by George Gibbs is a story set after a soldier, Jim Horton, recovers from surgery and discovers he's been living as his twin brother, Harry. The tale revolves around Jim's internal battle with honor and deception after a successful operation. The novel introduces us to Jim, waking up in a hospital, confused and in pain, only to realize he has taken on his cowardly brother Harry's life while still in the war. Jim reflects on his actions and his brother's cowardice during the war. The introduction of Harry's unsuspecting wife, Moira, and her father, Barry Quinlevin, heightens the tension, as Jim must decide whether to continue the lie or face the consequences of telling the truth.

About the Author

George Fort Gibbs was an American author, illustrator, artist, and screenwriter. As an author, he wrote more than 50 popular books, primarily adventure stories revolving around espionage in "exotic" locations. Several of his books were made into films. His illustrations appeared prominently in such magazines as The Saturday Evening Post, Ladies' Home Journal, Redbook and The Delineator. He also illustrated some of his own novels, and the novels of others. As a painter he produced many portraits, and painted murals for Pennsylvania Station and Girard College in Philadelphia. His screenwriting credits include a film about the life of Voltaire.
