Summary

** "A Laodicean: A Story of To-day" by Thomas Hardy is a tale set in a time of transformation. The narrative follows George Somerset, an architect who finds himself navigating a world of changing customs and expectations, and Paula Power, a woman grappling with the weight of her family history. The story begins with George sketching a medieval church, thinking about his place as an artist in a rapidly modernizing world. Drawn in by the music from a local chapel he meets Paula, whose refusal of baptism hints at her inner conflict. Against a backdrop of social rules and family ties their lives are woven together, setting the stage for exploring their challenges, dreams, and the choices they must make. **

About the Author

Thomas Hardy was an English novelist and poet. A Victorian realist in the tradition of George Eliot, he was influenced both in his novels and in his poetry by Romanticism, including the poetry of William Wordsworth. He was highly critical of much in Victorian society, especially on the declining status of rural people in Britain such as those from his native South West England.
