*Far From the Madding Crowd* by Thomas Hardy is a story set in Victorian times, where the lives of people in the countryside get tangled up with love and trying to make a living. It mainly follows Gabriel Oak, a reliable farmer, and Bathsheba Everdene, a bright and headstrong woman. We first meet Gabriel as he notices Bathsheba passing by, and he is quickly drawn to her. Even though he is shy, his admiration for her grows, while she seems more interested in herself. Gabriel is also very dedicated to his farm and his sheep. As the story goes on, it becomes clear that Gabriel and Bathsheba will be a big part of each other's lives, facing happiness and hardships in the farming world.

About the Author

Thomas Hardy was an English novelist and poet. A Victorian realist in the tradition of George Eliot, he was influenced both in his novels and in his poetry by Romanticism, including the poetry of William Wordsworth. He was highly critical of much in Victorian society, especially on the declining status of rural people in Britain such as those from his native South West England.
