Summary

** "The Shadow Between Them; or, A Blighted Name" by Mrs. Alex. McVeigh Miller is a compelling story set in a late 19th-century West Virginia farmhouse, where the Groves family faces deep-seated tensions during Hallowe'en. The main character, Eva Somerville, yearns for love within a family plagued by strife and expectations. Initial scenes present Eva alongside her cousin Tabitha and envious twins Patty and Lydia as they prepare for a hayride, highlighting Eva's restricted life. As the night unfolds, mounting tensions and misinterpretations culminate in an explosive clash between young men, forever altering Eva's destiny. The narrative establishes a foundation for an investigation of themes such as familial conflict, the pursuit of personal desires, and the repercussions of societal norms. **
