Summary

"Let Us Kiss and Part; or, A Shattered Tie" by Alex. McVeigh Miller is a 19th-century romance that portrays a young couple, Leon and Verna Dalrymple, whose marriage crumbles under the weight of pride and poverty, leading to a painful separation. The story uses their strained relationship to highlight deeper themes as it transitions to focus on their daughter, Jessie, and her journey through a world of love, loss, and identity discovery. Starting with the couple on the brink of divorce due to mounting financial pressures, where Verna considers returning to her rich family, the narrative then leaps forward sixteen years to introduce Jessie, who must care for her younger brothers after her parents' unfortunate choices. The beginning establishes the story's core elements: the complexities of love, the effects of social class, and the importance of family obligations, paving the way for the challenges and relationships that will shape Jessie's life.
