"All-Hallow Eve; or, The Test of Futurity" by Robert Curtis is a story set in the Irish countryside during the 1800s that is centered on Winifred Cavana as she is the only daughter of a well-to-do farmer, and her relationships with multiple potential husbands. Social class, love, and family expectations are important ideas. The opening pages describe Boher-na-Milthiogue, where Winifred Cavana lives. Because she is the daughter of a rich farmer, a lot of men want to marry her, including Tom Murdock, whose father owns a nearby farm. What's at stake is the chance to marry for advantages, and also the underlying pressures. Because the Cavanas and the Murdocks want to see their children married for status and money, the story follows Winifred's feelings about Tom and Edward Lennon, and the audience gets a sense of the decisions that will shape not only her life but all the families fortunes.
