Summary

"Mildred Arkell: A Novel. Vol. 1 (of 3)" by Mrs. Henry Wood is a story set in the Victorian town of Westerbury that explores the lives of the Arkell family. The story centers around the kind-hearted manufacturer, George Arkell, and his son, William, who's caught between love and society's rules in a world divided by class. Characters like the loyal Mildred and the headstrong Robert Carr bring to life themes of class differences and selflessness. As Westerbury deals with social and economic troubles, the Arkell family faces their own challenges, including William's choice to work at the factory, rather than continue his education. The story sets up romantic possibilities that tangle the lives of William, Mildred, Charlotte Travice, and many others, setting the stage for conflicts, social commentary, and class struggles.
