Summary

"1900; or, The Last President" by Ingersoll Lockwood is a thought-provoking political novel set against a backdrop of intense social and political change. This story explores the consequences of unchecked populism through a fictionalized account of the 1896 presidential election and what follows. William Jennings Bryan's rise symbolizes hope for the "common people," with promises of economic reform like abolishing the gold standard in favor of silver. However, his administration's policies lead to unexpected economic chaos and moral decline, sparking riots and civil unrest. Lockwood's narrative highlights the struggles between the wealthy and the poor, showing the impact of extreme policies on a fragile democracy and the revolt that explodes against the government. The book serves as a warning and a commentary on the dangers of populism.
