Summary

"A Republic Without a President, and Other Stories" by Herbert D. Ward is a collection of shorter fictional tales from the late 1800s, starting with one about a truly shocking event: The President of the United States and his wife vanish from the White House. The story kicks off on June 8, 1893, with an announcement that throws the whole country into chaos. Newspapers scream the news from every front page, and the air is heavy with worry. Witnesses tell strange stories, pointing toward a possible political plot as the investigation struggles with odd possibilities. The narrative combines mystery and thrills, with a little political thinking for good measure, urging readers to consider the chaos of such a crisis.
