Summary

"Miss Marjoribanks" by Mrs. Oliphant is a 19th-century story focused on Lucilla Marjoribanks, a lively young woman navigating life and society following her mother's death. Determined to care for her father, her ambition and strong will is shown as she reorganizes her home and place in their community. At the beginning, Lucilla deals with her mother’s death and makes plans to support her father. When Lucilla gets home, she finds her father cares more about his medical work than what is happening around him. Although she wants to make a welcoming home, Lucilla’s attempts to comfort her father don’t work, which leads to both funny and sad moments as she learns more about her family. This kickstarts Lucilla’s desire to change her life and the social life of her small town with her charming but stubborn attitude.
