"The Rector" by Mrs. Oliphant is a Victorian-era story exploring the pressures of social roles and finding one’s place in the world. The story follows Mr. Morley Proctor, the new Rector of Carlingford, as he struggles to meet the expectations of his new role and the people in his parish. Though his arrival is met with excitement, Mr. Proctor soon feels unsure of himself and his ability to lead. As he gets to know the Wodehouse sisters and other members of the community, he questions his career path and what is truly important. The story peaks when Mr. Proctor feels helpless at the side of a dying parishioner, which pushes him to realize he is not suited for the job.
