This clergyman finds himself falling in love with Anna Ruthven, a young woman from the same religious community that he oversees. Because of his duty to his community, the unfolding love adds complications to Arthur's life, which is made more challenging due to another man named Thornton Hastings, who is both rich and also interested in marrying Anna.
