"The Cameron Pride; or, Purified by Suffering" by Mary Jane Holmes is a story set in the mid-1800's that introduces Katy Lennox, a young woman, who goes back to her uncle's farm after being away. As she comes back, she shows interest in a rich man named Wilford Cameron. Uncle Ephraim Barlow, a traditional man, and his old-fashioned home are introduced. Katy's mother hopes for her daughters to be with people from higher social classes by way of her connection with Wilford Cameron. The story shows the differences between friendly family and wanting to be in a higher class. It shows problems in family with class differences and personal goals. Morris Grant, a local doctor who likes Katy, makes the story more complicated as the characters deal with changing old customs and what society wants from them.
