Summary

"The Warden" by Anthony Trollope is a tale set in the 1800s, focusing on the life of Rev. Septimus Harding, who manages Hiram's Hospital, a home for elderly, impoverished men. Harding's peaceful existence in the cathedral town of Barchester is disrupted when concerns arise about whether funds are being distributed fairly. The story explores complex issues of church politics and the need for social change, as ambitious reformer John Bold challenges Harding's position, forcing him to question his ethics and responsibilities. Adding to the tension is Harding's son-in-law, Dr. Grantly, a strong supporter of the church, setting up a conflict between preserving old traditions and embracing new reforms in a society grappling with questions of morality.
