Summary

"My Ántonia" by Willa Cather is a story told from the perspective of Jim Burden, reflecting back on his childhood and his friendship with Ántonia Shimerda, a young immigrant girl from Bohemia arriving in the late 19th century, as she adapts to the harsh realities of life on the Nebraska prairie. Jim's account explores the themes of memory, the beauty and difficulty of nature, and the lives of immigrants struggling to make a home in a new land. The story begins with Jim moving to his grandparents' farm after his parents pass away with the arrival of the Shimerda family. The novel paints a picture of the bond between Jim and Ántonia, set against the wild American frontier and the trials faced by immigrant families building new lives.
