Summary

"A Girl of the Plains Country" by Alice MacGowan is a story set in the early 1900s is about the Van Brunt family as they journey from New York to the tough Texas plains after Hilda’s mother passes away. The story shows the difficulties, strength, and changes of the family as they adjust to a new life on the plains. Young Hilda, along with her father, Charles, and Aunt Valeria start a new life in the plains where they meet Hank Pearsall, the ranch manager, who helps them settle in. Hilda's excitement and open mind is different than her father and aunt as they start at a new ranch. Hilda becoming friends with Uncle Hank and her love for the wild land shows her hope and imagination after a loss for the family.

About the Author

Alice L. MacGowan was an American writer. She and her sister Grace MacGowan Cooke wrote more than 30 novels, about a hundred short stories, and some poetry. Alice produced several best sellers, including Two by Two, that was serialized in the Saturday Evening Post and was published in 1922 in New York under the title The Million Dollar Suitcase.
