Summary

"The Wiving of Lance Cleaverage" by Alice MacGowan is a story dropped deep in the early 1900’s, where we meet Lance Cleaverage, a young, spirited man figuring out love and life in the Tennessee highlands. He's especially interested in Callista Gentry, a girl who catches the eye of everyone around, and the story looks at how their connection plays out against what their small town expects. Right from the start, we see a lively Sunday scene that shows how different everyone is and what they hope for. Lance is a bit of a rebel, playing his banjo and going against the grain, while Callista is presented as a beautiful, sought-after girl. Their early talks hint at more than just friendship, but the opinions of Widow Griever and others add pressure to their budding romance, setting the stage for a story filled with love, competition, and the weight of society's views.
