Summary

"The Frontiersmen" by Charles Egbert Craddock is a captivating historical novel that throws readers into the hardscrabble lives of American pioneers, exploring themes of affection, struggle, and staying alive on the border. The narrative centers on Peninnah Penelope Anne Mivane, a brave and lively character who juggles her heart's desires with the rough realities of frontier existence, and her young admirer, Ralph Emsden, who protects her from attackers alongside the settlers. From the beginning, Peninnah's grit shines as she helps Ralph during a violent encounter outside her family's stockade—a safe place made to protect the settlers. The story also shows us the unique personality of Peninnah's grandfather, Richard Mivane, who deals with hearing loss while acting as a protector and leader. As the story grows, so do the tensions between settlers and native people, painting a picture of young love blooming amidst the chaos of a changing world.

About the Author

Mary Noailles Murfree was an American author of novels and short stories who wrote under the pen name Charles Egbert Craddock. She is considered by many to be Appalachia's first significant female writer and her work a necessity for the study of Appalachian literature, although a number of characters in her work reinforce negative stereotypes about the region. She has been favorably compared to Bret Harte and Sarah Orne Jewett, creating post-Civil War American local-color literature.
