Summary

"The Phantoms of the Foot-Bridge" by Charles Egbert Craddock is a story set in a haunting mountain region that combines love, loss, and ghostly happenings. John Dundas is trying to start over in a faraway mountain town, where he meets Millicent Roxby and her uncle, Simeon, and quickly finds himself wrapped up in the tall tales about a footbridge haunted by ghosts of people who died tragically. The troubles really begin when Emory Keenan, who is jealous of Dundas, shows up and gets into a fight. What happens to Keenan connects the past and present, revealing secrets and leaving everyone to deal with loss and memories.

About the Author

Mary Noailles Murfree was an American author of novels and short stories who wrote under the pen name Charles Egbert Craddock. She is considered by many to be Appalachia's first significant female writer and her work a necessity for the study of Appalachian literature, although a number of characters in her work reinforce negative stereotypes about the region. She has been favorably compared to Bret Harte and Sarah Orne Jewett, creating post-Civil War American local-color literature.
