Summary

"The Prophet of the Great Smoky Mountains" by Charles Egbert Craddock is a story that occurs in the Great Smoky Mountains, where the characters' lives are intertwined with love, right and wrong, and problems with nature and the law. We meet Dorinda Cayce, a young woman working in the fields. She meets with Rick Tyler, a young man who is being chased by the law, which begins their difficult relationship. The story then describes the tough environment of the Great Smokies and the daily routines of the people who live there, especially Dorinda Cayce, who is involved with emotions toward Rick Tyler, who is running away from accusations. Their conversations show a growing tension between what they want and the unfairness of justice as Rick is being targeted for a murder he did not do. With the sheriff and his group close by, the danger increases, and Dorinda struggles with her feelings for Rick, as well as what society expects, preparing the reader for the story that will cover love, sacrifice, and freedom among the challenges of their lives.

About the Author

Mary Noailles Murfree was an American author of novels and short stories who wrote under the pen name Charles Egbert Craddock. She is considered by many to be Appalachia's first significant female writer and her work a necessity for the study of Appalachian literature, although a number of characters in her work reinforce negative stereotypes about the region. She has been favorably compared to Bret Harte and Sarah Orne Jewett, creating post-Civil War American local-color literature.
