Summary

"The Story of Old Fort Loudon" by Charles Egbert Craddock introduces us to a gripping account of survival and resilience in the 18th-century American frontier. The story follows a group of pioneers, including the MacLeod family, as they make a dangerous trek through the Cumberland Mountains pursued by Cherokee Indians, with the hope of reaching the perceived safety of Fort Loudon. The novel highlights the courage of Odalie MacLeod and her husband, Alexander, alongside a young man named Hamish, showing the hardships and fears they face as they struggle to remain hidden from the Native American tribes who view them as invaders. Early encounters emphasize the beauty of Odalie, the treacherous nature of their environment, and the ever-present danger that dictates their lives, presenting the complex relationship between the settlers and the Native Americans amidst the looming threat of conflict.

About the Author

Mary Noailles Murfree was an American author of novels and short stories who wrote under the pen name Charles Egbert Craddock. She is considered by many to be Appalachia's first significant female writer and her work a necessity for the study of Appalachian literature, although a number of characters in her work reinforce negative stereotypes about the region. She has been favorably compared to Bret Harte and Sarah Orne Jewett, creating post-Civil War American local-color literature.
