Summary

"The Story of Blue-Beard" by Charles Perrault is a chilling fairy tale that uses suspense to teach a lesson about the dangers of nosiness and not following directions. The story features a rich man named Blue Beard, who is scary because of his strange blue beard. Because of this, Blue Beard struggles to get married until one woman finally agrees. Blue Beard gives his new wife all the keys to his amazing house, but warns her to never open one closet. Despite the warning, she becomes curious, especially after her friends encourage her, and she opens the door to find the dead bodies of Blue Beard's ex-wives. When Blue Beard finds out she disobeyed him, he gets ready to kill her, but she sends for her brothers, who arrive in time to save her. In the end, Blue Beard is killed, the woman gets all his wealth and then shares it with her family, escaping his dark past for a brighter and secure future.

About the Author

Charles Perrault was a French author and member of the Académie Française. He laid the foundations for a new literary genre, the fairy tale, with his works derived from earlier folk tales, published in his 1697 book Histoires ou contes du temps passé. The best known of his tales include "Little Red Riding Hood", "Cinderella", "Puss in Boots", "Sleeping Beauty", and "Bluebeard".
