Smith is a science fiction story about a brilliant young boy named James Quincy Holden, who is confronted with a life-altering tragedy when he loses his parents in a car accident. The story kicks off with James' fifth birthday celebration which quickly turns to chaos. Following the loss, James begins to realize that his "Uncle" Paul Brennan cannot be trusted. With his parents gone, James must try to survive using his exceptional intelligence and his father’s inventions, most notably the Holden Electromechanical Educator, to navigate a world filled with hidden dangers and disloyal people. As he deals with his grief and fights for survival, James's high intelligence puts him at odds with many adults, thus leaving readers to want to know what will happen next.
