Summary

"Tybalt" by Stephen Barr is a science fiction story that plays with the themes of change and what it means to be yourself. It tells the tale of Howard Dax, a physics teacher who is unhappy with his life. To escape, he tries a risky experiment to travel to the past and live as one of his family members. Unexpectedly, he finds himself not as a person, but as a cat named Tybalt in old England. As Tybalt, Dax faces the struggles of living in a world very different from his own. He deals with dangerous situations, complicated relationships with people, and the funny parts of being the pet of a jester. Trying to tell people who he really is and find a way back to his old life, he struggles with the fear of death and the difficulties of making himself understood across time, creating a mix of comedy, suspense, and thoughts about life.
