"Retained for the Defence: A Farce, in One Act" by John Oxenford is a funny play that makes fun of society with over-the-top situations. It's about confusing identities and how silly social classes can be, showing how looks can trick you. It all happens at a party where Mr. De Windsor, back from a trial where Pawkins was found not guilty of stealing, invites Pawkins, thinking he's innocent. Then Whitewash, who was Pawkins's Lawyer, gets stuck in funny lies when De Windsor wants him to marry his daughter, thinking Whitewash is a super good guy. As things go on, Pawkins becomes important by accident, and the real plans of everyone are shown in a funny way, ending with a silly solution that points out how ridiculous the situation really is.
