Summary

"Twilight Sleep" by Edith Wharton is a story about families and society after World War I in America. It shows how people, especially women, tried to find their place in the world while dealing with what everyone expected of them. The book starts with Nona Manford, a young woman, trying to connect with her very busy mom, Pauline. Pauline is always doing things for others and going to social events, which makes Nona feel like her family isn't as important. This beginning shows the conflict between the younger generation, who want to find themselves, and the older generation, who are stuck in old ways. As Nona thinks about her family and who she is, the book starts to question who people are and what society makes them do.

About the Author

Edith Newbold Wharton was an American writer and designer. Wharton drew upon her insider's knowledge of the upper-class New York "aristocracy" to portray, realistically, the lives and morals of the Gilded Age. In 1921, she became the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize in Fiction, for her novel, The Age of Innocence. She was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame, in 1996. Her other well-known works are The House of Mirth, the novella Ethan Frome, and several notable ghost stories.
