Summary

"Night and Day" by Virginia Woolf is a book set in the early 1900s, around when authors were trying new styles of writing. It tells the story of Katharine Hilbery, a smart young woman from a well-known family of writers, and how she deals with different people, especially Ralph Denham. Ralph is trying to figure out what he wants in life and what society expects from him. The story looks at who people are, how class affects them, and how traditions can hold them back, all through Katharine's experiences and the decisions she has to make. At the start, Katharine's mother hosts a tea party on Sunday that shows off how people act and relate to each other. Even though Katharine is there and helping out, she's thinking about other things happening around her, like the strange Mr. Denham. When he comes, he makes the party feel different and shows the gap between the older guests and the younger people trying to find their purpose. They talk, and Denham criticizes how Katharine grew up, while she struggles with her family's history and what people want her to do. This creates a good start for the ideas that Woolf explores in the book.
