Summary

"Two Christmas Stories: Sam Franklin's Savings-Bank; A Miserable Christmas and…." by Hesba Stretton is a set of late 1800s stories centered around family and the real meaning of Christmas, where characters like Sam Franklin and Kate Layard undergo hardship and make difficult choices during the holidays. "Sam Franklin's Savings-Bank" stars Sam Franklin, an ordinary man who finds that he can save money after his marriage. However, the secret of his hidden savings creates problems in his marriage. Sam's focus on saving leads him to keep his wealth a secret from his wife, Ann, until a turning point when he finds out that she sold his coat (that contains all of his savings!). This causes Sam to think about what is important which opens the door for him and Ann to have more love and trust during their difficult times.

About the Author

Hesba Stretton was the pseudonym of Sarah Smith, an evangelical English author of religious books for children. These were highly popular. By the late 19th century Jessica's First Prayer had sold a million and a half copies – ten times more than Alice in Wonderland. She concocted "Hesba Stretton" from the initials of herself and four surviving siblings, along with the name of a Shropshire village she visited, All Stretton, where her sister Anne owned a house, Caradoc Lodge.
