Summary

** "Froebel's Gifts" by Kate Douglas Smith Wiggin and Nora Archibald Smith is an instructional text from the 1800s. This book highlights Friedrich Froebel's ideas about how young children learn, particularly his kindergarten methods and special toys meant to help kids grow. The goal is to explain Froebel's ideas and techniques to teachers and parents, showing why it's important for kids to learn by doing. The writers begin by explaining "Froebel's Gifts," which are learning tools and materials designed to help kids learn. They point out that these gifts come from years of watching and working in kindergartens, and they are intended to help children understand the world through activities they can touch and feel. The book also discusses how these gifts show important ideas like togetherness, action, and color, helping to build a strong base for early learning. The authors suggest ways of teaching that involve playing and keeping kids interested, and they tell teachers to change their methods to fit each child's natural curiosity and how they learn best. **

About the Author

Kate Douglas Wiggin was an American educator, author and composer. She wrote children's stories, most notably the classic children's novel Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm, and composed collections of children's songs. She started the first free kindergarten in San Francisco in 1878. With her sister during the 1880s, she also established a training school for kindergarten teachers. Kate Wiggin devoted her adult life to the welfare of children in an era when children were commonly thought of as cheap labor.
