Summary

"Penelope's Postscripts" by Kate Douglas Smith Wiggin is a set of travel stories that follows Penelope as she explores Europe in the early 1900s. As she travels to places such as Switzerland, Venice, and Wales, readers get to see Penelope's adventures, her observations, and her character as she records her experiences through the narrative. In the beginning of the book, while visiting Lake Geneva, Penelope and her friend Salemina consider their travels. Penelope’s reflections on ruins and her eagerness for deeper experiences lead the friends to decide to visit Yverdon, the city of Jean Henri Pestalozzi. Penelope is shown to be funny, thoughtful, and a bit quirky, setting the tone for the book.
