"The Quilt of Happiness; Creeping Jenny; and Other New England Stories" by Kate Douglas Wiggin is a group of stories set in New England in the early 1900s, the first being about Jenny Lane, a determined young woman in Riverboro and her life in a run-down farmhouse. Left on her own because of her parents' death, Jenny has to stay strong and continue on. The story paints a picture of the hard times and strength it took for Jenny to keep her home and make a living, even though she had physical problems and there were challenges in society during that time. When a young man, Rufus Holt, shows up looking for work, a relationship begins between him and Jenny, who are each fighting their own fights. Together they start to grow as people, and their relationship begins to blossom amidst their hardships.
