Summary

"The Purple Cloud" by M. P. Shiel, a novel from the early 1900s, explores themes of exploration, the drive for fame and fortune, and feelings of hopelessness, through the story of Adam Jeffson. Jeffson, a young doctor, starts an expedition to the North Pole, facing both the tempting promise of adventure and his inner fears and desires. His relationship with a mysterious woman named Clodagh, as well as a troubling sermon about doom from preacher Mackay, set the stage for inner uncertainty. The story follows Jeffson, along with Clodagh's nephew Peters, as they journey forward, with something bad looming.
