Summary

"Miss Numè of Japan: A Japanese-American Romance" by Onoto Watanna is a story set in the late 19th century that explores love, ambition, and cultural tensions. The book follows Orito Takashima and Numè Watanabe, childhood friends from well-off Japanese families who are supposed to get married, as arranged by their fathers. Orito goes to America for his education, which causes a conflict with the plans for their marriage. The story begins with Orito and Numè as children, already bound by their fathers' desires, but also shows Numè's initial resistance to Orito leaving and their predetermined marriage. The opening sets the stage with new characters, particularly featuring a spirited American girl on a ship headed to Japan, suggesting future romantic interests and cultural misunderstandings that will further complicate the narrative.
