Summary

"Asmodeus; or, The Devil on Two Sticks" by Alain René Le Sage is a story examining people and society, told through the adventures of a student named Don Cleophas, who meets the demon Asmodeus. Asmodeus, or "The Devil on Two Sticks," shows Don Cleophas the secret failings of people, hilariously commenting on love, goals, and what's right or wrong. The book starts with Don Cleophas running from killers in Madrid, ultimately leading to him freeing Asmodeus from a bottle; Asmodeus then promises to show him supernatural things and help deal with a woman who wronged him. The beginning sets up a strange and funny trip full of smart talk, magic, and a study of complicated relationships.

About the Author

Alain-René Lesage was a French novelist and playwright. Lesage is best known for his comic novel The Devil upon Two Sticks, his comedy Turcaret (1709), and his picaresque novel Gil Blas (1715–1735).
