Summary

"Grandmother: The Story of a Life That Never Was Lived" by Laura Elizabeth Howe Richards is a story from the early 1900s that pulls us into the life of a young woman, known as Grandmother, who finds herself living with her aging grandfather in a small, peaceful town; as she tries to make a home there, the book looks at ideas about love, sadness, and trying to be happy even when relationships are hard, and we follow our protagonist from her arrival with her grandfather, after their travels in the west, to her surprising role as a companion to the unpredictable Rachel, whom the grandfather has great concern for; this is where the story shows us Rachel's initial dislike of Grandmother, creating drama and emotional issues that will develop later on, and as the story progresses, hints of Grandmother's hidden history, her sweet nature, and the tangled feelings of love and envy within the family begin to surface, suggesting a deeper tale of loss and the search for acceptance in a world filled with complicated relationships.
