Summary

"The Visions of Dom Francisco de Quevedo Villegas" by Francisco de Quevedo is a 17th-century satire that uses bizarre conversations and striking visuals to examine morals and the state of humanity. The story follows a main character who, after watching an exorcism at a church, finds himself in conversations with interesting beings, like a devil who claims to be possessed by a man. Through these interactions, the book humorously points out the faults and dishonesty within society, especially those in roles of power like the catchpole, revealing uncomfortable truths about justice, human nature, and the ridiculous parts of societal expectations in 17th-century Spain.

About the Author

Francisco Gómez de Quevedo y Santibáñez Villegas, Knight of the Order of Santiago was a Spanish nobleman, politician and writer of the Baroque era. Along with his lifelong rival, Luis de Góngora, Quevedo was one of the most prominent Spanish poets of the age. His style is characterized by what was called conceptismo. This style existed in stark contrast to Góngora's culteranismo.
